St. Louis County Board Announces 2009 Grants Awards
The St. Louis County Board has approved awards of over $3.1 million in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the County’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnership (HOME), and Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) programs. St. Louis County secures funding and administers these programs. Grant funds are primarily used for affordable housing, human services, public facilities, infrastructure improvements, and economic development activities.
The $2.3 million CDBG program focuses primarily on bricks and mortar projects. Funds are targeted to assist low and moderate income individuals and families with the intent of creating viable communities. Awards are made to St. Louis County communities and non-profit agencies. The City of Duluth receives separate HUD funding.
Seventh District County Commissioner Steve Raukar, chair of the St. Louis County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and a member of the original committee that worked on attaining CDBG status in 1992, stated, "In retrospect, attaining CDBG entitlement status with the help of Congressman Oberstar and the late Senator Wellstone has proven to be one of the most significant success stories we have played a role in. It has made it possible for St. Louis County to award grants totaling $40 million, and leveraging four times as much to cities and non-profits to address housing, public infrastructure needs, to assist with economic development projects and job creation and to support community public services. This is but another example of how partnering with other units of government can produce dividends for the greater public good. I think it's important that when we send our money to Washington, that some of it comes back to taxpayers."
