St. Louis County Celebrates 150^th Anniversary

With Time Capsule Project

As part of St. Louis County’s Sesquicentennial year, St. Louis County Officials are hosting a “Picture Yourself in History” time capsule project, which celebrates the every day lives of St. Louis County residents. St. Louis County will be collecting small items from residents that define their lives in northeastern Minnesota, throughout the Sesquicentennial year of 2006. The items will be placed in two time capsules that will be interred in Duluth and Virginia, Minnesota at the end of 2006 to be opened in fifty years, in 2056.

St. Louis County will be on hand at the City of Duluth’s 1956 time capsule unveiling program on Saturday, August 12, 2006, at 11:00 AM, in the City Hall Rotunda, to exhibit one of their “Picture Yourself in History” time capsules and to accept donations from the public. (Guidelines for donation below.)

Due to space constraints and long term suitability, not all items will be able to be used. Those items not accompanied by a Self Addressee Stamped Envelope (SASE) and not chosen for the time capsule project will not be returned. Please send your small, durable item, along with a SASE to:

Please include as much information about your item as possible.

Good Things to Send For the Time Capsule:

*Photographs, especially black and white prints, which last longer. Remember to keep them small and identify on a small label on the back: who is in the photo, where they are, what they’re doing, and the date taken.

*Small items of common use made of metal, wood or paper.

*Original poems, drawings or stories.

*Sports statistics or schedules.

*Child’s schoolwork or report cards.

*Tiny toys.

*Advertisements.

*Invitations to events.

*Business cards or greeting cards.

*Badges.

*Recipes.

*Television guide.

*Ticket stubs.

*Local maps.

*Seeds.

*Sheet music or song lyrics.

Bad Things to Send For the Time Capsule:

*Anything large.

*Computer disks, CDs, DVDs (Because media changes so quickly, they are likely to be unreadable in 50 years).

*Items made of Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) or rubber. They break down quickly.

*Newsprint. It is acidic and deteriorates easily.

*Batteries.

*Food.

*Currency and other things of value.

*Anything you need in the next 50 years!
