St. Louis County to Recognize Duluth Honor Guard

June 1, 2006

As part of St. Louis County’s Sesquicentennial year, the County is presenting a Volunteer Recognition Award Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at 9:30 AM at the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth as part of its regular County Board meeting.

In honor of Memorial Day, May 29th, Flag Day, June 14th, and the anniversary of D-Day, June 6th, Third District St. Louis County Commissioner Bill Kron will recognize the Duluth Honor Guard.  This volunteer organization presides over the funerals of hundreds of Veterans each year, honoring their service.

Commander John Marshall oversees more than fifty Veteran volunteers who conduct a three round volley, play Taps, and perform a flag folding ceremony at Veterans’ funerals.  Last year, these solemn rites were performed at 194 funerals by the Duluth Honor Guard.

The group also teaches flag etiquette in schools and to Scouting groups, and advocates for Veterans who need assistance.

“The devoted volunteers of the Duluth Honor Guard have brought solemnity and solace to thousands over the decades that they have provided their services to Veterans and their families,” said Commissioner Bill Kron,  “As a Veteran, I am proud to salute them.”
