Early records of our Sheriffs are sketchy but it appears that after changing the name of Superior County to St. Louis, the Governor of the territory on April 7, 1855 appointed Zach J. Brown as Sheriff and tax collector. When the County was organized in 1856 however, the Governor appointed A.J. Ellis the Sheriff.
