St. Louis County Court Bailiffs are now employees of the Sheriff’s Office. As part of the court’s transition to being run by the state, bailiffs were transferred to the Sheriff’s Office effective January 1, 2005. Bailiffs were transferred to the Court Administrator in 1987 but were historically appointed by the Sheriff prior to that time.
Bailiffs are responsible for assisting the courts in their daily operations. Bailiffs maintain a sense of order and perform tasks as an essential part of the courtroom team. The duties and responsibilities will not change under the direction of the Sheriff at this time but may move toward a court security role in the future.
