Prune Oak and Elm Trees Before April 1 March is the month to prune fruit trees and to complete pruning any oak or American elm trees that are in need of pruning. Preventing the spread of oak wilt and Dutch elm disease is best accomplished by dormant pruning which must be completed by April 1. Read more about it here.
