Horticulture Day 2010 is set for Wednesday, August 25, at the North Central Research and Outreach Center in Grand Rapids. The event will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 pm and will feature tours of annuals, perennials, small fruit, apple orchards and high tunnel vegetable production. There will also be a workshop on high tunnel vegetable production and a plant disease diagnostic table, and Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions. The Center is located at 1861 E Highway 169, and admission is free (although donations are welcome). If you have questions, give them a call at 218-327-4490.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a series of classes being offered by Minnesota Extension in St. Louis County in September and October. If you are a caregiver, these classes will provide you with the skills you need to take care of yourself. You can find the brochure and registration form here.
Safe Food Preservation Modules are now available from University of Minnesota Extension. These five-minute "mini modules" can be viewed on the web and include topics such as "Stop Botulism" and "Crunch Time Pickling 101". More topics will be added in the future. Visit University of Minnesota's Food Safety website and scroll down to the Food Preservation Mini Module Series for links to view them.
Variety Recommendations for Northern Minnesota are available for purchase. Fruit Varieties for Northern Minnesota is $3.00, and Vegetable Varieties for Northern Minnesota is $4.00. The vegetable list has now been updated for 2010. These publications will help you make the right choices when purchasing plants and seeds for your garden. Contact one of our offices to purchase. Looking for gift ideas? We now have a set of the four recipe booklets featured at our past four autumn "fests". The books are filled with recipes collected from our Master Gardeners, and highlight different produce. You get all four books: Tomato Recipes (40+ pages), Potato Recipes (35+ pages), Apple Recipes (60+ pages, and Pumpkina and Squash Recipes (60+ pages). Cost for the set is $14.00, and can be purchased in either the Duluth or Virginia office. Individual recipe books are available for $5.00 each. For mail orders please include $5.00 for shipping.
