What's New

Variety Recommendations for Northern Minnesota are available for purchase. Fruit Varieties for Northern Minnesota is $3.00, and Vegetable Varieties for Northern Minnesota is $4.00. The vegetable list has now been updated for 2010. These publications will help you make the right choices when purchasing plants and seeds for your garden. Contact one of our offices to purchase. Postage for each is $1.00.

Logo: Growing Your Own Growing Your Own Fruits and Vegetables, a conference scheduled for March 20, will feature research based information on growing your own produce. The cost of the program is $25 which includes fruit and vegetable variety lists, program materials and refreshments.  See our brochure for more information or to register.

Extension's Yard and Garden News is a great way to keep abreast of the latest advice for keeping your landscape in prime condition. A new edition is published monthly. Follow this link for the current issue.

Prune Oak and Elm Trees Before April 1 March is the month to prune fruit trees and to complete pruning any oak or American elm trees that are in need  of pruning.  Preventing the spread of oak wilt and Dutch elm disease is best accomplished by dormant pruning which must be completed by April 1.  Read more about it here.

Looking for gift ideas? We now have a set of the four recipe booklets featured at our past four autumn "fests".  The books are filled with recipes collected from our Master Gardeners, and highlight different produce.  You get all four books: Tomato Recipes (40+ pages), Potato Recipes (35+ pages), Apple Recipes (60+ pages, and Pumpkina and Squash Recipes (60+ pages).  Cost for the set is $14.00, and can be purchased in either the Duluth or Virginia office. Individual recipe books are available for $5.00 each.  For mail orders please include $5.00 for shipping.  

Minnesota Gardening Calendar The 2010 Minnesota Gardening Calendar is still available in limited quantities in the Duluth and Virginia Extension offices. This award winning calendar is filled with timely tips for lawn, garden, and houseplant care, with a special feature on using vines in Minnesota home landscapes. Maps of average frost-free dates and USDA Plant Hardiness Zones for Minnesota are included. The calendar is a great gift for persons interested in horticulture and home gardening.   Price is $14.00.  Shipping cost is $3.00.
